Knowledge Review and Skill Development

When?

After you have attended the orientation session and complete all of the self-study requirements, the next step is to attend a series of knowledge review and skills development sessions. Remember that before taking part in any other course activities, you need to attend one of our, four-hour orientation sessions.

During your knowledge review sessions, your instructor will go over the information you’ve gained by working through the eLearning program. He or she will bring this information to life with first-hand examples of how divers apply this information on dive vacations and here at home. We discuss and answer questions to provide clarification and reinforcement of your new knowledge. Be sure to bring your study materials and a pen to all classroom sessions.
Skill Development

Once you have acquired the important background information, it’s time to get in the water and start mastering fundamental scuba skills (a pool dive follows every classroom session). This takes place in our own 16-foot-deep, indoor, heated pool, under the watchful eye of your instructor. You will first see a demonstration of how each skill is done, then have the opportunity to practice until you are comfortable.

Knowledge review and skill development sessions are available on any of three different schedules.

Accelerated Weekend Classes

This accelerated course is action-packed and very demanding of your time and attention. You must have read the book, watched the DVD, and completed all of the end-of-chapter study guides prior to the start of class on Friday evening. The schedule is as follows:

  • Friday Evening, 6:00-10:30: Discuss schedule, watch Risk Awareness DVD, fill out and sign paperwork, and demonstrate individual skills. This is also where we introduce the use of scuba equipment in the water.
  • Saturday, 9:00-5:00: Briefly go through the book, discuss and answer any questions, then adjourn to the pool for snorkeling and scuba skills.
  • Sunday, 9:00-5:00: Complete water skills begun Saturday, review for and take written test provided all paperwork is turned in.

Because of the accelerated schedule, weekend students are invited to come to other scheduled pool nights at no additional charge — with advance notice.

Available starting dates for the Accelerated Weekend course include:

  • Friday, March 17, 2017
  • Friday, April 7, 2017

Private/Semi-Private Lessons

With private or semi-private lessons, you make your own schedule. This is something we are able to do because of the flexibility afforded by having our own pool on premises. We can work out scheduling details when you sign up.

Figure on on roughly four, four-hours sessions. This is in contrast to the 24 hours that group classes normally take. We don’t cover any less in private classes (or demand any less from our students). It is just that, when working with small groups, we can use time more efficiently.

Costs will vary depending on group size. Learn more…
