Rental Gear

There is no substitute for having you own gear

There is no substitute for having you own

Here are two things that will help ensure your next dive vacation is safe and enjoyable — and a better value.

Below are excerpts from a letter we recently received. It underscores two things:

  • Our group trips are led by a knowledgeable and experienced Harry’s Dive Shop instructor who is there if you need them. You won’t be at the mercy of a local dive “professional” who may have no idea what they are doing.
  • There is no substitute for having and using your own equipment. You will know how it works, when it was serviced and how it was cleaned and stored,

Here is the letter.

My partner and I just finished four days of diving around Anilao. To put it mildly, things could have gone much better.

We arranged for a divemaster to look after my friend, specifically requesting a female, but were assigned a male instead. Unfortunately, he struggled with even the basics — too much weight, then too little, pulling her down, holding onto her shoulder, and generally towing her around rather than letting her dive. By the end, she was mostly just hanging onto him while he swam.

On my side, the rental BC they gave me was a constant source of frustration. Air kept getting trapped where I couldn’t dump it, and even a slight touch on the inflator caused me to ascend more than I wanted.

The regulator was also a disaster. It whistled every time I inhaled and required far too much effort to breathe from. Swapping it for another didn’t help. The corrosion on some of the metal parts didn’t inspire confidence either. It felt like the equipment hadn’t been properly maintained.

It was a painful lesson, but I now understand the value of having and using your own equipment.
