Dominica

April 3-10, 2010

Dominica (pronounced dom-in-ee-ka) has, until recently, been one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean. Word is getting out, though. Rodale’s Scuba Diving rated Dominica Number One for “Healthiest Marine Environment” in their annual Top 100 Issue.

Waterfall

Dominica is an independent nation and should not to be confused with the Dominican Republic. Dominica lies between Guadeloupe and Martinique, shooting almost straight up from the sea.

In 1876 a traveler and writer by the name of William Gifford Palgrave visited the island of Dominica and put his impressions of the island into these words. “In the wild grandeur of its towering mountains, in the majesty of its almost impenetrable forests, the gorgeousness of its vegetation, the abruptness of its precipices, the calm of its lakes, the violence of its torrents and the sublimity of its waterfalls, Dominica stands without rival throughout the whole island catalog of the Atlantic and Pacific combined.”

Fish

The reefs of Dominica hold surprises for even the most seasoned of divers; Frogfish, Seahorses, Flying Gurnards, Snake Eels — these rare creatures become almost daily encounters. Mix this with seamounts, pinnacles, vertical walls, and coral reefs every bit as lush and exciting as any on earth. The result is some of the finest scuba diving anywhere not to mention that the snorkeling is phenomenal too.

Here is where you experience the warm volcanic waters bubbling from the ground creating a natural hot tub on land and underwater the water’s surface. There are walls over 1,500 feet deep, pinnacles soaring up from the depths, cloaked in schools of fish and gently sloping reefs that are suitable for all divers of levels.

Beach

While serious divers will choose Dominica for the quality of diving, there are some moments when one must come up for air. Here is where Dominica once again stands alone in the Caribbean. Often called the “Nature Island of the Caribbean,” due to its spectacular, lush, and varied flora and fauna, Dominca’s environment is protected by an extensive national park system. The most mountainous island of the Lesser Antilles, its volcanic peaks are the cones of lava craters and include Boiling Lake, the second-largest, thermally active lake in the world.

Our topside destination, Castle Comfort Lodge, is the epitome of a small intimate Caribbean dive lodge, located one mile south of the capital Roseau. It is a 15-room, family owned and operated dive resort, and also home to Dive Dominica.

Sunset

Make no mistake about it; Dominica’s amazing underwater spectacle has equal billing with its topside attractions. Precipitous mountains, vibrant scenery and craggy canyons adorning the island’s interior are cloned undersea.

We were last in Dominica in 2005, before Hurricane Katrina changed the world. Join us as we go back to this tropic wonderland of diving, whale watching, snorkeling, waterfalls, hikes, and more. Space is limited; call or visit for more info.
